Tourist in My Own Town: Here Comes the Bride, Katharine Hepburn’s Wedding Dresses

As much time as I spend at The Kate, I have rarely browsed the Katharine Hepburn Museum, filled with a fascinating collection of intriguing memorabilia and mementos. Last week, I made a special stop to take a full tour of “Here Comes the Bride,” showcasing three wedding gowns. One gorgeous and well-preserved number is what she wore to her nuptials to Ludlow Ogden Smith in 1928. The other two dresses are stunning costumes from her films.

Katharine Hepburn was not only one of the most famous movie stars and fashion icons (mine included), but a beloved fixture around Old Saybrook. The fact that nobody bothered her when she was in residence in Fenwick and grocery shopping at Walt’s in Old Saybrook made this area an idyllic retreat from her movie star life.

At the museum, you can trace her life story from her early days in Fenwick, through the devastating hurricane of 1938 that destroyed her home (leaving only the bathtub, featured prominently in the exhibit!), to her later years as one of the most renowned actresses. The display is fantastic, made even better by the insights shared by Museum Coordinator Emma Burbank.
