1/24/17, Hygge, A Winter Escape & Perfect Pants

What the heck is hygge and how do you do it? This Danish word (pronounced hoo – ga) is breaking the internet. Articles and books about it are, all of a sudden, everywhere. If you haven’t heard, it essentially means “cozy”. And I for one, am all for it! Unbeknownst to me, I grew up with hygge. My grandparents rented a ski house most seasons, and we headed up to Vermont or New Hampshire for long weekends and ski vacations. We were all about hygge. My grandfather kept a pot of Gluhwein (hot spiced wine) on the stove for warming up returning skiers, and my mother stripped down to her red union suit and wooly socks (hygge clothing!) for apres ski at home. We spent our evenings in front of the fire with jigsaw puzzles, Scrabble and cocoa. Pure hygge. I’m looking forward to a hyggeful winter, filled with candlelight, hearty fare, and all things cozy. If there’s any trend we all could use right about now, hygge it is.
