13 Questions for Jewelry Designer Dina Varano

The Shoreline is a veritable breeding ground for designers, makers, and artists. Just in time for Mother’s Day, we asked a few of our favorite local jewelry designers what inspires them (and a few other burning questions).

Here’s what Dina Varano had to say:

How long have you been making jewelry?

I started in High School.

What was the first piece you made?

A pair of earrings out of wire I found in my dad’s garage that I hammered.

What inspires you?

Nature, living and exploring. Being curious.

When you’re out of ideas, what do you do for inspiration?

I look at my old journals. Or just work, ideas come from working. Showing up to the studio no matter what.

The favorite piece you’ve ever made and why?

The Spine. Sterling silver (or gold) hammered interlocking pieces that taper and it follows the shape and length of your spine. It’s worn down the back. I love the way it moves. It’s a conversation piece. It’s one of a kind.

What is your go-to piece from your own collection (if different from above).

Flair pendant.

What’s your favorite piece for spring?

Hammered hoops in 14kt gold or silver.

Necklaces, bracelets, or rings: which is your comfort zone?

I love the intimacy of rings. I also like necklaces – they make a statement.

Favorite gemstone or metal?

Silver and gold.

Morning or evening person?

Late morning.

What can’t you live without (excluding your family)?

Creating every day. Being alone in the studio, getting lost in the process.

What’s something that’s always in your fridge?

Prosecco
