The Connecticut Shoreline is a veritable breeding ground for designers, makers, and artists. Just in time for Mother’s Day, we asked a few of our favorite local jewelry designers what inspires them (and a few other burning questions).

Here’s what Susan Roberts had to say:

How long have you been making jewelry?

30 years.

What was the first piece you made?

A seed bead bracelet on a loom. I was in high school.

What inspires you?

Layering shapes and colors, music, and nature.

When you’re out of ideas, what do you do for inspiration?

Hunt for new stones, and blaring music.

The favorite piece you’ve ever made and why?

My statement necklace The Morning Cloak. It has multi strands that turn a simple outfit into a show stopper.

What is your go-to piece from your own collection (if different from above).

My long or short Leilia Necklace in labradorite.

Your favorite piece for spring?

Right now it’s a Y Neck with these beautiful Oval lab stones. These stones have amazing fire that reflects in them.

Necklaces, bracelets, or rings: which is your comfort zone?

Necklaces.

Favorite gemstone or metal?

Labradorite is top of the list and a new Blue Moonstone.

Morning or evening person?

Morning.

What can’t you live without (excluding your family)?

Music and exercise.

What’s something that’s always in your fridge?

Hummus and carrots.

Where can I buy your jewelry?

Online here: www.susanrobertsjewelry.com and various retail shops including Lulu’s in Guilford, Idiom in New Haven, Grace in Niantic and Deep River Jewelry. A full list is on my site.
