There’s nothing I find more inspiring than an entrepreneurial story, especially one that involves a family business. And we’ve got a great one right here in Old Saybrook. Celebrating three generations of the Bolles family, Saybrook Country Barn is moving (forward) in a fresh and modern direction, starting with a bold new name: Saybrook Home.

The Country Barn began 41 years ago in the original white farmhouse by Grandma Clara selling rag rugs, candles, penny candy, and fudge (of course!). Two generations and 35,000 square feet later, it’s become THE Shoreline destination for everything for the home, from classic contemporary to coastal furniture, home decor, hardware, and gifts, plus a forward-thinking women’s and men’s apparel shop. While it’s a tourist destination for sure, it is generations of Shoreline families that have helped the shop flourish and expand into its current vast campus. The Bolles family Is involved every step of the way, offering an unusual level of service and a high-styled mix of the best quality brands to help you Live Your Best Life at home.

These days, with over 70 highly trained stylists and employees, it’s a treat to wander the rooms, featuring vignettes packed with ideas that work so well for our farmhouse-chic lifestyle. Whether you’re in the mood for a room refresh, a holiday do-over or a full-on reno, the new Saybrook Home is the place to start.

Here’s what I love:

The  Furniture Shop at Saybrook Home

While most folks on the Shoreline are familiar with the furniture shop, if you haven’t wandered the rooms in a while, I think you’ll be surprised by the breadth and depth of style. Whether your personal style smacks of coastal contemporary, hues traditional or transitional, you’ll find ALL of it here. Rooms are styled like HOME, layered with throws and pillows and lamps, to give you lots of fresh ideas for easy updates. And if you don’t know WHAT your style is, then you’re really in luck. There is an entire in-house interior design team and, get this, it’s free! They’re happy to match a lamp to your current living room, craft made-to-measure custom window treatments, or do a top-to-toe makeover, pulling fabrics and finishes from their vast library and working closely with you to come up with a scheme that’s livable and lovely.

Needless to say, all the sofas, chairs, tables and case goods are mainly American made and come in a plethora of finishes and fabrics. So many of us get overwhelmed with too many choices and end up with analysis paralysis when it comes to a home update; what would be better than having someone take on the project for you?

I meandered through the gallery of rooms for an hour and was amazed at how many times I overheard someone commenting that they just wanted to spend the ENTIRE day in the shop. Believe me, it’s not hard to do. I snapped some pix of arrangements that work to give you an idea (that ceiling fixture is on my must-have list).

The Holidays at The Home Shop

On the hunt for holiday inspo? Head straight to The Home Shop, in the original white farmhouse. While this spot is the Shoreline destination for tabletop accessories, pillows, throws, hostess and wedding gifts, it literally sparkles for the holidays. The merchandising elves have been oh-so-busy decorating trees and laying tables. And no matter what your theme, you’ll find it here, from adorable pup ornaments in every possible breed to coastal-inspired oyster shell trees. DIYers will love the myriad options for greenery with faux-blooms, wreaths, and roping, while harried holiday shoppers have been known to take home a fully-decorated tree laden with ornaments (they’ll deliver!).
I always stock a closet this time of year with inexpensive hostess gifts so I won’t show up empty-handed, and you’ll find plenty to choose from here, from classic Frasier Fir candles (love the new hand-wash) and fun reindeer mugs to these cheeky tea towels, all of them under fifteen bucks a pop! Spend an afternoon here, roaming the rooms, nooks, and crannies, and you’ll likely find everything you need for a happy holiday.
