A Classic New England Treat: Cider Donuts at Scott’s, East Lyme

I try to stay as far away from donuts as possible (not easy with the proliferation of exotic bakeries these days), but I simply cannot resist an apple cider donut this time of year. We used to make the trek out to Clyde’s Cider Mill for fresh-from-the-fryer goodies, but now I know I don’t have to drive that far for the ultimate Sunday morning treat. On weekends only, Scott’s in East Lyme offers their crispy, cakey version, and for me, it’s one of the best around. While you’re there, you can fill your trunk with pumpkins, kooky gourds of all shapes and sizes, a ridiculous variety of apples, fresh veggies, pies, mums, and whatever else you fancy.

I dare you to make it home with a full 1/2 dozen donuts (I can’t). It’s easy to make a day of it with their annual corn maze (this year it’s Pirate Treasure), wagon rides, and pick-your-own apples. Reservations are required on the weekends for the maze.
