A Spa Staycation

Many readers might think I spend my time traipsing from massage to facial, but actually, no. I have enough trouble sticking to the basic grooming regimen of hair and nails because I just can’t sit still. When my friend Kim mentioned her plan to try a staycation in February, I sent her off for innovative treatments at a few local health and wellness destinations.

I’m the rare bird who loves winter. On the heels of the holiday hubbub, it’s an opportunity to slow down and get cozy in front of the fire with a good book. This year, though, as friends flew off to Florida for the season, I wondered how I could possibly cope with the cold and slow pace of the Shoreline. It occurred to me that I would benefit from being really intentional with my time. My husband works in the city during the week, and too many hours alone isn’t good for my mental health! I’ve gabbed with Erica on the phone repeatedly about getting together, only to realize we’d have to leave our houses! This time of renewal can veer into a big rut pretty quickly. That’s when I had the idea to plan a long weekend Spa Staycation and try out some new treatments that I wouldn’t normally consider.

Just in time for a Spring glow-up, here’s my list:

Graceful Aesthetics, Essex

First on my list was the “Platinum Hydrafacial” at Graceful Aesthetics in Essex. AH-MAZING! I cannot say enough about the entire experience. This is not your typical one-size-fits-all medspa.

Upon my arrival, Owner Meghan Whelen, a former ER nurse, welcomed me with a latte and took the time to discuss my skincare goals. Wrinkle reduction, of course, was on the list! I’ve been hesitant about Botox, and Meghan offered several natural alternatives. I climbed into the heated bed with crisp white sheets and enjoyed my facial (which included a warm hand massage), and an hour later, my face and neck were noticeably plumper and dewy. The spa itself is freshly decorated with stylish furniture and calming colors. FIVE stars for Graceful Aesthetics!

Blue Feather Wellness, Guilford

My next stop was the “Signature Massage” at Blue Feather Wellness, also located in Guilford. I’m adding this experience to the “run-don’t-walk” category! It involved a delightful blend of massage therapy, reiki healing, gentle cupping, and aromatherapy. I would even rename it the “60-minute vacation” because it was so relaxing.

Owner Dana Brewer brings over 20 years of experience in integrative medicine from Yale New Haven Hospital to Blue Feather Wellness. Her background as a holistic healer for individuals living with cancer truly shows as she works her magic. During the treatment, she explains what she’s doing and why, which is so helpful. The scented oils and soft music enhance the calming atmosphere, making it a truly immersive experience.

Healing Salt Cave and Wellness Spa, Guilford

I snagged an appointment for a 30 minute session at the Healing Salt Cave and Wellness Spa in Guilford.  Salt therapy originated from Eastern European salt mines and caves, where miners unexpectedly developed excellent skin and robust health. It turns out that inhaling the dry salt acts as an expectorant, and due to the tiny particle size, it penetrates the skin. When used regularly, this therapy eases all manner of ailments, from arthritis and anxiety to skin and respiratory issues. I attended just one session, so I didn’t experience a miraculous result, but the cave was so unique that I’d be interested in trying it again as an add-on to a massage. Yoga classes are also available in the space. I noticed an adorable twenty-something celebrating her birthday at the spa with her grandmother. The two of them, smiling in their bathrobes together, were a perfect advertisement for grabbing a friend and booking some treatments!

Tranquil Balance, East Lyme

Float Therapy was not something I had considered before, but I’m glad I gave it a go. Tranquil Balance in East Lyme offers magnesium float sessions in an essentially anti-gravity chamber. The high concentration of salt creates buoyancy, allowing you to float effortlessly on your back while your muscles, bones, and joints relax completely. After the session, I felt like I’d had an excellent stretch. I can see why it would be a valuable therapy for all kinds of ills, from back pain and arthritis to sleep disorders and high blood pressure. While I didn’t experience the full benefits after just one float, I did enjoy the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a long time!
