A Wonderland of Epicurian Stock at Higganum Village Market
Are you looking to put a little inspiration into your pandemic meal production? There’s a village market close by in Higganum that carries EVERYTHING and you won’t believe it until you see for yourself. Sure, they carry all the provisions you’d expect to find in a country market — a deli, prepared and frozen foods, chips, and drinks but the mind-blowing part of this place is the sheer volume and variety of unusual, hard-to-find-in-these-parts goods.
I’d heard the buzz about it from a slew of friends who share my affinity for rare condiments, sauces, and spice so I recently dropped into the market. The aisles are packed to the gills with all manner of goodies from Gochujang (Korean Chili Sauce) raw salad dressings (Chosen Life, Braggs), tins of sustainable cured fish, and an entire rack devoted to salt (Jacobsen’s, Hickory Smoked Amola) among lots of other compelling items. I spent some time perusing more than a dozen different kinds of kimchi and a shelf full of pickled carrots, beets, and jalapenos. It’s hard to choose from the collagen-infused teas, chia protein smoothies, kombucha, and scores more in the beverage cases. You can find all varieties of noodles, yummy cheese (Cojita, Iberico), and a good selection of cured meats. Higganum Village Market is one of those dynamic spots that’s worth a drop-in if you are in the area. It’s now on my regular rotation!
