An Easy and Elegant Getaway to The Margin Street Inn, Westerly

Between my husband’s broken shoulder and my busy life, we couldn’t squeeze in a full vacation this summer. We did, however, get out of dodge for a couple of perfect days. The first night we spent on Block Island (more on that later) and passed our second night at the Margin Street Inn in Westerly.

This beautiful 19th-century manse was rescued by Charles Royce (of Ocean House and Weekapuag fame), meticulously restored, and reopened as a B&B. It’s smack on the Pawcatuck River and only a couple of miles from Watch Hill. Sarah Cooper and her husband, Chris, run the place and are welcoming and gracious hosts. Our very spacious king room was in the neighboring Beech House (also restored to Ocean House standards), and was fresh and lovely in shades of white and blue, with a classic white marble bath. The public rooms are grand AND comfortable (not the easiest thing to achieve), with plenty of nooks for reading, or playing one of the many hand-crafted backgammon boards strewn about. The great lawn stretches down to the river, and kayaks are available for a paddle. Breakfast is taken in a sun-filled dining room on white marble tables. Croissants and scones from Loveridge Place, plus a delicious frittata, bacon, yogurt, homemade granola, and fruit salad are included in your stay.

With tons of restaurants in walking distance and a short ride to Watch Hill beaches, it’s a luxurious place to hide out for a couple of days (without the hefty price tag of Watch Hill or Weekapaug). Once the tourists leave, it’s the perfect spot for a fall getaway or family gathering.
