Can we just say how much we love Whitecrest Eatery in the Velvet Mill in Stonington? We don’t get over there nearly enough, but their new pizza outpost, The Back Door,  and a collaboration with Beer’d Brewing for wings and smash burgers had us flying down 95 early on a Wednesday!

We usually think of this spot as a foodie favorite with fresh, farm-to-fork creative fare, but we know that excellent chefs make excellent snacks, too, and we were looking forward! The smash burger could well be the best in the region, with several versions to choose from. We highly recommend the Baby Blue with a 4 oz local patty, blue cheese, bacon jam, lettuce, and tomato on a homemade bun. 

The wings come by the full or 1/2 bucket with choices of sauce and dip. We went classic buffalo with blue cheese. Here, they are ever-so-crispy, which, for me, is KEY to a perfect wing. Burgers run $10 to $13; a 1/2 bucket of wings is $10, full bucket is $20. We skipped the beer but nibbled on a fantastic pizza from the Back Door, WhiteCrest’s new pizzeria. The chewy wood-fired sourdough crust and plenty of pepperoni was a delicious classic, but more inventive options are available.

Burgers, Buckets, and Beers are served on Wednesdays from 4:30 to 9 pm. Next time, I’ll be driving down for Schnitzel Sundays (4:30 – 8 pm). Whitecrest is such a happy place with the most congenial waitstaff and fun vibe. If you haven’t had their finer dining menu, you must give it a go.
