Nana’s Bakery & Pizza Opens Outpost in Westerly
We weren’t sure that anything could top Nana’s in Mystic, named one of America’s best new restaurants of 2021 by Esquire Magazine, but the new Westerly location just may have. This sit-down, eat-in or take-out restaurant tucked behind High Street has a Cali-cool vibe, fresh decor, and all the delights you’ll find in Mystic and more. We settled in for a lazy, late lunch, starting with a colorful plate of glazed local farm vegetables, housemade preserved squid with pickled vegetables, and their famous toasted sourdough. (The happy family next to us feasted on crazy-good-looking cheesy garlic bread, which we will definitely indulge in next visit!).
Next, we ordered what they’re justifiably famous for, Nana’s sourdough pizza, the dough made daily with stone-ground grains. Pizza comes in a largish personal size (perfect for 2) or a giant 13 x 18 sheet (daily slices are also on offer). No analysis paralysis here, as the staff will split your pizza. Our half and half was Rhode Island (tomato sauce, potatoes, clams, hot pepper, local soppressata, and lemon) with a half of classic tomato/mozz. Pizza perfected! Salads and sandwiches are on the menu, too (a meatball flatbread, anyone?). No matter how stuffed you are, there is ALWAYS room for dessert. Do not leave without a plate of warm donuts. I kid you not when I say they are the best I’ve ever had.
It was a bit early for the inventive cocktail menu, which includes RIP Betty White (bourbon, orange tamarind fermented honey, luxardo cherry), but we happily sipped a funky and delicious orange wine from the card of organic and skin-contact bottles and glasses. Our friends at Fox Farm Brewery are on tap, plus housemade kombucha. Chef and partner James Wayman’s thing is fermenting (obviously), so the entire experience is umami-rich. You can pick up a few bottles of his sister company’s Moromi Shoyu and Sugar Kelp Soy on the way out. Next time we’ll come a bit later as the dinner sounded incredible, too.
