The E List, 9/23/15

It’s not easy being the only non-artist in a family full of them, but one side-effect this immersion had on me, is that a museum is my happy place. I practically grew up at the Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner, and when my sisters and I had nothing to do, we’d head down the street to the Fogg. I don’t pretend to know a lot about art, and plenty is entirely lost on me (despite all those art history classes!), but I love to look. A quiet respite to a hectic life, wandering a gallery is a great way to slow down. I don’t take photos (unless it’s for The E List), so it’s a rare moment of digital disconnect, too. At home, I’m surrounded by family art: my great grandfather’s watercolors, my grandfather’s photographs, my dad’s conceptual works, my sister’s early oils from art school. I’m lucky to have this treasury of family history and pass it down to my daughter (the only grandchild!).
I have the same limited attention span as the rest of us, so I don’t plan a full day at a museum. An hour or so is enough to lift my spirits and see the world outside of my own narrow view. The cooler days present a perfect opportunity to take advantage of new exhibitions, renovated galleries, and exciting events at our local institutions. Here’s my short list.
