A Scandi Bonanza at Bestemors

Fans of the Scandi trend should shoot straight to Bestemors. This shop of all things Nordic has been around long before we were obsessed with clogs and Dala horses. For 32 years, Bestemors (named for the owner’s Norwegian grandma) has been a purveyor of clogs, textiles, sweaters, delicacies, greeting cards and lots more from the region. Whether Swedish or not, every home deserves at least one colorful Dala horse, the iconic emblem of the country, and here you’ll find them, handmade in all colors and sizes (oh, and mugs, placemats, napkin holders, ornaments, chocolates and ice cube molds, too!). The organic and handwoven cotton table runners and mats are a classic gift, and you’ll find the Norwegian patterned sweaters are unusually well-priced. The biggest lure, though, is their clog selection. They’re the number one retailer in New England (!) of Dansko, offering an extensive assortment. Me, I love the classic wooden variety, and they’ve got the old school versions, too, from Troentrop.  Thanks to the Hygge craze, we all now know how important candle light is, and the selection here is lovely, especially the cute bulbous ones that fit right in any stick (see photo below).

Norwegians and Swedes will be thrilled to find their favorite foods, from a variety of herrings and meatballs, to spaetzle mix and cardamom bread baked specially for Bestemors (note: do not leave without a loaf or two)!
