Dinner (and Breakfast) at Shipwright’s Daughter, Mystic

Shipwright’s Daughter gets everything right. Dinner here feels like an event from the moment you walk in, with its happy atmosphere, chic yet understated coastal design, and warm, knowledgeable service. Then there’s the food. Easily one of my top five destinations for elevated dining on the Shoreline.
We started with two meticulously composed appetizers: sweet scallops paired with pickled peaches, and tuna crudo with plums and a dollop of caviar. Creative, unexpected, and absolutely delicious.
For my entrée, I chose the Black Sea Bass à la Plancha, served with plump mussels, fondant potatoes, snow peas, and a silky saffron emulsion. Laura ordered the Painted Hills Beef Strip Steak with Seacoast mushrooms, potato mille-feuille (which our charming server described as “potato croissants”), blistered shishitos, and a buttery, lemony béarnaise espuma. Every dish was perfectly executed without feeling fussy, allowing the exceptional local ingredients to shine. It was, without question, one of the best meals I’ve had in recent memory.

After our cozy overnight at The Whaler’s Inn, we settled in at the bar at Shipwright’s for a working breakfast. I’m an à la carte girl when it comes to the morning meal—I much prefer building my own perfect plate from the sides menu. Mine started with a warm, flaky biscuit slathered with homemade jam and creamy butter, then I added thick-cut smoked bacon and a generous bowl of fruit bursting with juicy blackberries. Laura opted for the hearty SWD Egg Sandwich with garlic-sage sausage, bacon tomato jam, and cheddar.
Mornings are quiet here, making it a lovely spot to linger over an excellent cappuccino (or try the Golden Latte: a heady blend of espresso, turmeric, Saigon cinnamon, telecherry and honey) and fresh and housemade treats like the House Gravlax Toast or decadent Brioche French Toast. Do NOT skip the chicken fat home fries (I shamelessly ate Laura’s!).
