Exquisite Lunch on the Banks of the Lieutenant River at Cafe Flo, Old Lyme

I can’t go an entire summer without at least one visit to Cafe Flo, in my opinion, one of the best outdoor lunch spots on the Shoreline. An enticing menu of fresh salads, sandwiches, and entrees comes complete with a spectacular view of the Lieutenant River. While I’m always curious about the liverwurst sandwich (and figure there must be a regular who insists upon it, because it’s a rather unusual menu item), you can’t miss with the glorious Lobster Salad on a bed of arugula, sprinkled with fresh corn and topped with avocado. It’s hard to resist, and I generally don’t. This time I accompanied it with a fruity red sangria (a handful of creative cocktails are available, plus beer and wine by the glass). One thing I’ve discovered during the pandemic is that since we get out so rarely, I no longer take special moments like this one for granted. As I enjoyed my lazy (and socially distant) lunch by the river, gazing at the marsh grasses wafting in the light breeze, it was plain to see why the American Impressionist colony made this special place their home.

The tables are on a covered terrace, so weather is not an issue. The genius team at Gourmet Galley is in the kitchen.
